Our Leadership Team

Steve Bartel
Co-Founder & CEO
Steve Bartel
Co-Founder & CEO
Steve's MIT education led to early careers at Blizzard, Facebook, and Dropbox. As an Engineering Manager, he was heavily involved in recruiting and managing hundreds of candidate relationships. He recognized the dearth of technologies for nurturing passive talent and providing efficiency to teams. This led him to co-found Gem in 2017. When not at work, Steve enjoys coding AI bots to play video games or taking hip-hop dance workshops.
Nick Bushak
Co-Founder & CTO
Nick Bushak
Co-Founder & CTO
Before Gem, Nick spent almost 7 years at Facebook, where he managed product engineering teams for Pages, Ads, and Messenger. He started and led the team that grew Boosted Posts, Facebook’s SMB ads product, to over $1B per year in revenue and millions of advertisers in just 2 years. Nick was inspired to bring the same top-notch internal recruiting software that enabled Facebook to recruit an exceptional team to every other company in the world. When he’s not working on building out Gem’s Engineering, Product, and Design teams, you’ll find Nick traveling and collecting frequent flier miles.
Joe Totten
VP of Sales
Joe Totten
VP of Sales
Joe is a veteran of the talent acquisition technology space, having previously led go-to-market at Connectifier and launched new products globally at Linkedin. It’s this experience that gave Joe the confidence to join Gem in its early days, since he knew talent leaders were asking for a product like Gem. Joe was also inspired by the founders’ long-term vision for Gem as well as the quality of the engineering team. Outside of work, Joe is likely spending time with his family or trying to carve out time to play piano.
Joseph Yang
VP of Customer Success

Prior to Optimizely, Joseph helped build a social enterprise start-up called Good Paper, and also spent seven years in investment banking between Bank of America and ABN AMRO. Outside of work, he can be found playing soccer with his kids and jogging around the city with his wife.

She is a Columbia alum and previously worked as an investment banker at Centerview Partners in NYC. She enjoys skiing, road tripping, and learning to cook her mother’s secret recipes.

Sara joined Gem after spending years building foundational demand generation programs at a handful of B2B SaaS startups. She loves marketing, startups and being part of a team that changes an industry for the better. When not at work, Sara is usually hanging out with her twin daughters or making plans for future vacations with her husband.
David Dold

Dave has a long history of joining tech companies at an early stage and helping build out their operations teams as they grow. Prior to joining Gem, he was an early member of the operations teams at both Google and Dropbox, where he helped build teams in San Francisco and opened offices in Austin and across APAC.
Sarah Koo
Head of Product
Sarah Koo
Head of Product
Sarah came to Gem from Workday, where she helped build the foundation of the Workday Cloud Platform by working with some of its largest customers. Before that, she was the first hire at Pattern (which Workday acquired) building enterprise software for sales teams; there, Sarah developed empathy for salespeople’s pain points, which ultimately sold her on the vision of doing the same for talent teams at Gem. Her free time is largely spent blasting classical music, experimenting in the kitchen, and playing in the snow and sun.
Mike Pinkowish
Head of Engineering
Mike Pinkowish
Head of Engineering
Mike is a seasoned engineering leader who spent most of the 2010s at Facebook where he earned his stripes building teams and growing organizations. As a hiring manager, Mike quickly recognized the opportunity that Gem had to up-level how teams recruit with first-class software. Outside of the office, Mike enjoys skiing, slow-cooking, and spending time with his Boston Terrier, Ziggy.
Caroline Stevenson
Head of People
Caroline Stevenson
Head of People
Caroline joined Gem from Dropbox, where she spent 6+ years building out engineering teams and specializing in placing executives. She started using Gem while at Dropbox, and it fundamentally changed the way she worked. She joined the Gem team in hopes of helping other recruiters improve their workflows. When not at work, Caroline enjoys hiking, experimenting with new recipes and petting other people's dogs.
Drew Regitsky
Founding Engineer
Drew Regitsky
Founding Engineer
When the founders were ready to scale Gem into a full-fledged business, Drew was the first person they hired. Drew is a veteran startup engineer with expertise in conceptualizing and building products from the ground up, having done so at multiple startups over the past decade. Gem's clear value to its earliest customers - plus having known Nick and Steve since their time as classmates at MIT - easily convinced Drew to take the leap and become a founding member of the Gem team. When he's not behind a computer screen, he enjoys climbing, photography, and cooking some pretty legit Szechuan food.

The Backstory

When co-founders Steve Bartel and Nick Bushak were working as engineering managers at Dropbox and Facebook, both companies were looking to rapidly hire and expand. But there wasn't an effective way to track passive talent relationships before talent was ready to apply... and the best people already had jobs. So, engineers, hiring managers, and recruiters built spreadsheets to keep track of the best of the best. These were their “Gems.”

Steve and Nick knew that managing and nurturing relationships with top talent was soon going to require more than a spreadsheet. It was going to require software—built specifically for recruiters—that could automate tasks, track touchpoints, show pipeline views, and offer analytics for forecasting hires. They recognized recruiting teams deserved more than the piecemeal tools they currently had. That recognition was where Gem was born.
